Inhaltsangabe: Der lange, mörderische Sommer von 1977 in New York: die Stadt stöhnt unter der Hitze, es gibt immer noch Rassenunruhen und jedermann lebt in Furcht vor einem unheimlichen Serienkiller, dem Son of Sam, der mit Vorliebe Liebespärchen erschießt.
Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Geschichte des jungen Vinny aus der Bronx erzählt, der sich als King des Viertels sieht: Er hat eine wunderhübsche Frau, er ist Star der grassieren Discowelle, bei seinen Freunden ist er hoch angesehen und niemand ahnt etwas von seinen zahlreichen Affären. Doch als er eines Abends in der Nähe eines Mordtatortes Ehebruch begeht, macht er einen inneren Wandel durch, denn er scheint unheimliches Glück gehabt zu haben.
Innerlich zerrüttet, verfällt er mehr und mehr und auch die Rückkehr seines Freundes Ritchie, der zum Punkrocker mutiert ist, kann ihm nicht helfen. Während die Stimmung wegen des Killers immer mehr hochkocht, nähert sich die Beziehung der alten Freunde einer Katastrophe...
