Inhaltsangabe: | Es war einmal in einem dunklen Sumpf. Dort lebte ein hässliches grünes Monster: Shrek, der Oger. Er lebte dort ganz alleine, und wenn sich jemand in seinen Wald hineinwagte, dann erschreckte der Oger die Menschen und hatte wieder seine Ruhe. Doch wie das in Märchen so ist - eines Tages ändert sich alles. Denn am Rand des Waldes läuft Shrek ein Esel über den Weg - ein sprechender Esel, der gerade auf der Flucht vor den Soldaten des bösen Lord Farquaad ist. Dieser will nämlich alle Fabelwesen einfangen und festhalten. Außerdem möchte der Lord die schöne Prinzession Fiona heiraten, um König zu werden, und deshalb schließt er einen Handel mit Shrek ab: Wenn es dem Oger gelingt, ihm Fiona zu bringen, dann wird er im Gegenzug alle Fabelwesen aus dem Sumpf entfernen lassen, damit dort wieder Ruhe einkehrt. Tatsächlich gelingt es Shrek und dem Esel in einer abenteuerlichen Rettungsaktion, die schöne Prinzessin aus ihrem abgelegenen Schloss - wo sie von einem feuerspeienden Drachen bewacht wird - zu befreien. Bei näherer Betrachtung ist Fiona allerdings alles andere als erbaut von ihrem Retter - als hässlichen Oger hat sie sich ihren zukünftigen Traumprinzen nun wirklich nicht vorgestellt.
