Inhaltsangabe: | Dies ist die Geschichte von Edward D. Wood jr. (Johnny Depp), der nichts lieber tat, als Filme zu drehen und hin und wieder Frauenkleidung zu tragen. Voller Enthusiasmus für seine selbstgeschriebenen, qualitativ minderwertigen Drehbücher bekommt 1952 Wood die Gelegenheit, einen Reißer über eine Geschlechtsumwandlung zu drehen und macht ein menschliches Drama mit sich selbst in der Hauptrolle daraus. Als er zufällig die Bekanntschaft des schon sehr abgewrackten Althorrormimen Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau) macht, hat er endlich einen Star an der Hand, mit dem er bei den Studios vorspricht. Sein nächstes Projekt wird "Bride of the Atom", zu dem er bereits einen ganzen Zirkel skurriler Mitspieler und Mitarbeiter um sich scharrt. Doch die Geldsorgen und Qualitätsmängel sind unübersichtlich, wegen seiner Vorliebe für Frauenwäsche geht seine Beziehung kaputt und Lugosi ist stark morphiumsüchtig, was ihn immer wieder zurückwirft.
