Inhaltsangabe: | Eine kalifornische Kleinstadt Ende der vierziger Jahre: Der schweigsame Barbier Ed Crane hadert mit der Monotonie seines Lebens. Unzufrieden mit Job und Ehe, scheint ihm plötzlich eine neue Chance zu bieten, als ein Kunde von dem Erfolg seiner Trockenreinigung erzählt und ihm anbietet, mit 10.000 Dollar Geschäftspartner seines florierenden Unternehmens zu werden. Ed beschließt, das ihm fehlende Geld von Kaufhausbesitzer Big Dave zu erpressen, der ein Verhältnis mit Eds Frau hat.
